Allegations: Lawsuits alleged
that Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, used deceptive marketing
practices to downplay the addiction risks of opioids like OxyContin,
contributing significantly to the nationwide epidemic.

Previous Legal Actions:
o
In 2007, Purdue and three executives pleaded
guilty to federal charges of misbranding OxyContin and paid over $600 million
in fines.
o
In 2020, Purdue Pharma pleaded guilty to new
criminal charges, including fraud and kickback conspiracies, and faced an $8
billion resolution with the Department of Justice.
o
The consulting firm McKinsey & Company also
paid over $600 million to settle investigations into its work advising Purdue
on how to "turbocharge" opioid sales.

The 2025 Settlement: The
recently approved $7.4 billion plan resolves virtually all pending litigation.
o
Sackler Family Contribution: The
Sackler family agreed to contribute between $6.5 and $7 billion and give up
ownership of the company.

Company Dissolution: Purdue
Pharma will be dissolved and replaced by a new company, Knoa Pharma, a
public-minded entity governed by a board appointed by states, which will
provide addiction treatment medicines at no profit.
o
Fund Allocation: Most of the
settlement money will go to state and local governments for addiction
treatment, prevention, and recovery programs.
o
Individual Victims: A
portion of the funds, about $850 million, is earmarked for individual victims
and their survivors, with potential payouts per person ranging from hundreds to
a few thousand dollars.
o
No Immunity: A crucial
difference from a previous settlement rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court is
that the Sacklers are not granted immunity from potential future lawsuits by
individuals who choose not to participate in the settlement.
The new
agreement has received overwhelming support from all 50 state attorneys general
and is expected to move forward with implementation and initial payouts in
2026.
